Somadasa P. Weehasinghe is the owner of Just Chocolate Palace and an Sri Lanka immigrant. He started his shop 9 years ago. His shop features a mouthwatering array of cakes and pastries, countless delectable chocolate candies, and a whole case full of breakfast goodies, just to ensure village residents can start the day really off on the right foot. There is also coffee, of course.
Weehasinghe’s professional relationship with food began in his home country of Sri Lanka when he took a job making pastries in a hotel. His employer paid half his tuition at a local hotel training school and Weehasinghe’s career was launched. At 26, he visited New York and stayed for a time working as a driver for the United Nations on a G-1 Visa. A few years later, he brought his wife and kids to USA. He moved into DC area to work at Palais du Chocolat.
Weehasinghe continued to refine his skills at Palais du Chocolat and later at the Grand Hyatt and Occidental hotels downtown, the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner, and Bread and Chocolate in Arlington. He sought every opportunity to acquire world-class culinary skills, whether by taking a class from a visiting Parisian chef or by observing the techniques of famous chefs with whom he had opportunities to work.
He is a very delightful person and good model for all hard working immigrants. We bought numerous cakes and pastries from his shop in the past years. His small size cakes are all very delicious and also in artistic forms.
We especially like his mango mousse cake, white chocolate mousse cake, and chocolate cups.
